Abstract

Effective communication between spouses is essential for fostering closeness and sustaining their relationship. This study aims to examine the applicability of social penetration theory and self-disclosure in interpersonal communication and relationships between spouses through comprehensive systematic literature review and content analysis methods. Following a stringent selection procedure with PRISMA method, eight scientific publications are qualified for the review. In the range of 2015 to 2024, numerous researches have been examined. The use of social penetration theory and self-disclosure in diverse contexts involving spouses, including significant age disparities and couples that married at a young age. Moreover, most methodologies employed in research with the application of social penetration theory and self-disclosure are qualitative, specifically interviews.  This study indicates that social penetration theory and self-disclosure remain pertinent in contemporary interpersonal communication within marital partnerships for fostering intimacy and sustaining the marriage relationship. Nonetheless, additional research and exploration of quantitative methodologies across diverse backgrounds and conditions of spouses are necessary
